Jealousy arrives like a verdict. In the moment it feels certain: someone is taking what is yours, or is about to.
Science treats it more narrowly. Jealousy is a reaction to a perceived threat that a third person will take or change a relationship you already have.
That is why psychologists separate it from envy.
Envy is wanting what someone else has.
Jealousy is fearing the loss of what you already have, usually to a rival.
Envy is a two-person comparison. Jealousy is a three-person alarm.
Everyday English blurs the words. People say they are “jealous” of a coworker’s promotion when they mean envy. The distinction still matters. The two states do not feel the same, and they do not point to the same problem.
Envy often carries inferiority and longing. Jealousy more often carries fear, suspicion, anger, and a sense of possible betrayal. An attractive rival can trigger both at once. They are still not one emotion with two names.
There is no jealousy circuit
Researchers usually describe jealousy as a blend. It can pull in:
- fear that the bond might end
- anger that a boundary was crossed
- sadness that the self feels smaller
- sometimes disgust or humiliation
That mix is one reason jealousy is hard to study in a brain scanner. There is no jealousy organ. What shows up are networks already used for threat, social pain, reward, and self-control.
Brain-imaging studies of romantic jealousy often light up the basal ganglia, including parts of the striatum, along with the insula, thalamus, amygdala, and prefrontal areas that weigh social meaning.
In one study, people imagined jealousy scenes. Basal-ganglia activity was stronger after they were in a formal relationship than before. The more romantic happiness they reported, the stronger the jealousy response. In plain terms: the more the bond matters, the louder the alarm can be. That is a motivational finding, not a moral one.
Other studies treat jealousy as a trait that varies in ordinary people. Those who score higher on jealousy have shown stronger brain responses to angry faces in threat-related regions. The modest implication is that everyday jealousy and extreme jealousy may sit on a continuum, not in two unrelated boxes.
A scan still cannot tell you whether a partner is unfaithful. Lab studies use scripts, posed faces, and imagined scenes. They find correlates. They do not read minds. They do not settle whether a feeling is justified.
Why the alarm exists
The leading functional account is simple. Jealousy protects a valued relationship from being taken or diluted.
Christine Harris and colleagues describe a core form that shows up early. Infants protest when a caregiver’s attention goes to another baby—not only when attention disappears. Adults add memory, imagination, and culture on top of that core.
The first move is fast: is this bond under threat? What follows can be rumination, confrontation, withdrawal, watching the other person, or repair. Personality and the relationship itself decide which path gets used.
Evolutionary psychologists, especially David Buss and colleagues from the early 1990s on, add a more specific claim about romance. Because fertilization happens inside the body, ancestral men faced uncertainty about genetic parenthood in a way ancestral women did not. The prediction: heterosexual men, on average, will be relatively more upset by sexual infidelity; heterosexual women, on average, will be relatively more upset by emotional infidelity, because emotional defection can signal that commitment and resources are leaving.
Forced-choice studies—“which would upset you more?”—have found that pattern in many samples. Meta-analyses have also found a smaller sex difference on rating scales and in some studies of real infidelities. Early physiological work reported stronger male responses to sexual-infidelity imagery on measures such as heart rate.
That literature is real. It is also contested.
Critics say the famous forced-choice effect shrinks with other methods, that wording matters, and that social roles can produce the same pattern without a specialized innate module. Harris argued in the early 2000s that several lines of evidence were weaker than advertised. Later replies said the key finding is an interaction: sex by type of infidelity, not “men feel jealousy and women do not.”
A fair summary is not “men are jealous about sex and women about love.” It is this:
- in heterosexual samples, the relative sting of sexual versus emotional threat often differs by sex
- both sexes can be devastated by either
- sexual orientation changes the pattern
- the gap is smaller than the stereotype
A Norwegian study found that people’s beliefs about “what men and women get jealous about” were more exaggerated than their own self-reports.
Culture and attachment sit beside any evolutionary sketch. People with anxious attachment—those who already fear abandonment—report more jealousy, more checking, and more catastrophic readings of mixed signals. People with avoidant attachment may deny jealousy and still act on it.
Learning tunes the alarm. A family that treated attention as scarce, a past betrayal, or a culture that treats partners as property can all lower the threshold. A threat system can be old and still be shaped by experience.
It is not only romantic
Romance gets most of the research. It is not the only version.
Sibling jealousy is often the first one people remember: limited parental attention, a new rival, an old rank under revision. Workplace jealousy is status protection—fear that a colleague will take credit, access, or a boss’s regard. Friendship jealousy is easy to miss because adults are supposed to be above it. The structure is the same: a valued bond, a third party, a possible demotion.
Researchers also split reactive jealousy from suspicious jealousy.
Reactive jealousy follows a clear event: a message, a broken agreement, an obvious rival.
Suspicious jealousy follows ambiguity or an internal forecast.
The first can be information. The second can become a loop. The feeling does not announce which kind it is. Behavior does. Checking once after a real discrepancy is not the same as monitoring a partner’s location, friendships, and tone by default.
Animals do not settle the question. Human infants show distress that looks like a core jealousy response. Some dog studies have been framed as jealousy when an owner attends to a fake rival. A 2024 reanalysis of “fairness” tasks across many species found little support for a deep, human-like jealousy in those experiments. Disappointment after a missing expected reward explained more of the data. Social species notice when valued attention goes elsewhere. Whether that is jealousy in the human sense is still partly a word problem.
When the alarm becomes illness
Ordinary jealousy is common and unpleasant. Pathological jealousy is not simply a louder version of the same feeling. It is a different condition.
Psychiatry has long described morbid or delusional jealousy: a fixed, false conviction that a partner is unfaithful, held against evidence and built out of misread clues. The literary name is Othello syndrome.
A 2024 review collected 73 published case reports of that condition, written between 1983 and 2023. It is a picture of people who ended up in the medical literature, not of jealous people in general.
In those reports:
- the patients’ ages averaged about 58
- men outnumbered women
- about half of the cases were tied to medical conditions such as stroke or neurodegenerative disease
- about a quarter were tied to psychiatric disorders such as delusional disorder
- about a quarter were tied to medications or other substances, including some Parkinson’s drugs
- violence was reported in about one-third of the cases
Some imaging series point toward right frontal or right thalamic disruption more often than a single “jealousy spot.” The anatomy is not settled. Antipsychotic medication is the treatment most often reported in case series. Many patients improve, often after a long delay to care.
That picture should not be used to pathologize every anxious partner.
In 2026, some researchers argued that a small subset of people have jealousy that becomes obsessional: intrusive, time-consuming, and hard to control, in a way that resembles other obsessive-compulsive patterns. They compare it to grief—nearly universal, sometimes prolonged into a distinct problem. Whether a formal “obsessional jealousy” diagnosis belongs in manuals is still a debate.
The practical test does not need a new label. If jealousy is a signal, it should be answerable to evidence and compatible with the other person’s freedom. If it is a delusion or a compulsion, evidence does not close the case, and the cost shifts onto the partner.
What the feeling can tell you—and what it cannot
Jealousy is information about an appraisal, not a photograph of the world. It says: I think this bond is at risk, and I do not think I can afford that loss.
Sometimes the appraisal is accurate. People do hide affairs. Agreements do get broken. A new friendship can become a substitute partner. Ignoring every jealous signal is not scientific sophistication. It is a different kind of denial.
Sometimes the appraisal is about the self. Status dropped. Attention thinned. An old betrayal is being replayed on a new face. The other person may not be the point. They may only be the face the alarm attached itself to. The body is still doing threat detection. The threat is internal.
Research can describe a feeling. It cannot referee a relationship.
“Men are more stung by sexual infidelity” is not a license to police a partner.
“Anxious attachment predicts jealousy” is not proof that the other person is inventing the problem.
A picture of the striatum does not decide what a text message meant.
What the research does support is smaller and more useful:
- jealousy guards relationships
- it is separable from envy
- it has recognizable correlates in threat and reward systems
- average sex differences in the kind of infidelity that stings most have been replicated, with real caveats
- extreme, uncorrectable jealousy can be a neurological or psychiatric condition and is associated with harm
The studies do not tell you what to do next. They leave you with narrower questions: what, exactly, is being threatened—sex, time, status, exclusivity, or the story you tell about your own worth? Did something actually happen, or is this only a forecast of what might happen?
That is what the science actually shows: what jealousy is, what it is not, and how far a study can take you before the facts run out.
